NexHarvest — Sovereign Food Production for Regional Australia
Australian food sovereignty project

Fresh food.
Grown where
it is needed.

Australia has a food security problem. Regional and remote communities face fresh produce shortages, fragile supply chains, and growing dependence on offshore technology to manage the systems that feed them. NexHarvest exists to change that.

Four interconnected failures
no single solution has addressed.

37%

Food insecurity is structural, not temporary

Foodbank Australia’s 2024 Hunger Report documents that 37% of regional households experienced food insecurity in the previous 12 months — nearly double the metropolitan rate. This is not a supply chain disruption. It is a systemic failure of infrastructure.

Off-grid

Grid dependence locks out the communities that need it most

Every commercially viable indoor farming system currently requires reliable grid connection. The communities with the greatest food security need — remote Aboriginal communities, regional pastoral stations, NQ outposts — are precisely those without reliable, affordable grid power.

No sovereign Australian AI platform exists for this sector

Every AI farm management platform for containerised growing is developed and hosted offshore — in China, the United States, the Netherlands, and Japan. These systems generate continuous data on Australian community food supply, crop performance, and operational patterns. None of that data stays in Australia.

2023

Parliament identified the gap. The market hasn’t filled it.

The 2023 Parliamentary Inquiry into Food Security found that Australia lacks sovereign food production capability for regional and remote communities and called for immediate technology investment. Two years later, no commercially ready Australian solution exists.

Solving all four problems
with one integrated system.

NexHarvest is developing a solar-powered, off-grid containerised growing system managed by a sovereign Australian AI platform — designed specifically for deployment in regional and remote Australia.

01 — Food

Local food production, anywhere in Australia

A single NexHarvest container unit produces up to 3,600 kg of leafy greens per year in any location — on a farm near the ACT border, at a remote mining camp in the Pilbara, or in a Northern Queensland community. Fresh food grown where it is consumed. No refrigerated trucks. No thousand-kilometre supply chains.

02 — Energy

Fully off-grid. Designed for where the grid isn’t.

Each NexHarvest unit integrates a 10kW solar array and 20–25kWh battery bank, enabling fully autonomous operation without grid connection. The system is engineered for Australian regional solar conditions — high irradiance, variable cloud, extreme temperatures — not European greenhouse environments.

03 — Sovereignty

Australian AI. Australian data. Australian ownership.

The AI management platform — developed in partnership with Charles Sturt University’s AI and Cyber Futures Centre — is built from the ground up in Australia, trained on Australian crop varieties and conditions, hosted on Australian infrastructure, and owned by an Australian SME. No offshore dependency. No data residency risk.

“Australia lacks the sovereign food production capability to support regional and remote communities and requires immediate investment in technology to address this.”

Parliamentary Inquiry into Food Security in Australia, 2023

Three forces are converging to make this the right moment for NexHarvest. Extreme weather events are making fragile regional supply chains more fragile. The collapse of the major US vertical farming operators — Bowery Farming, AeroFarms, AppHarvest — has validated what doesn’t work: grid-dependent, capital-intensive, urban-focused models. And Australia’s national security conversation has reached agricultural AI. The question is no longer whether this matters. It is who will build it.

Industry-led.
Research-backed.
Commercially ready.

NexHarvest Pty Ltd is an Australian SME with operational trading history in horticulture. That trading experience is what makes this project credible: we are not researchers who want to grow food. We are an operating agricultural business that has identified a market failure and is building the solution.

The research partnership with Charles Sturt University’s AI and Cyber Futures Centre brings genuine, published capability in AI-driven crop health monitoring, machine learning for agricultural systems, and cybersecurity architecture for sovereign infrastructure.

The commercial validation is real. Produce from our first trial site will be sold through an existing retail supply agreement with an IGA-affiliated independent grocer from the first growing cycle. This is not a pilot looking for a buyer. It is a commercial operation from Day 1.
